Auto bailouts + Transit City?

The Globe and Mail has a good piece on the contradictory policies of giving loans to auto companies while at the same time, funding public transit infrastructure.

I understand that the car companies employ thousands of people and contribute millions to the economy in Ontario - but wouldn't a transit system that employs thousands of drivers and mechanics also do the same? Would it not be better to invest the money into building infrastructure for the future, rather than assembling gas-guzzling cars of the past?
